The Swashakthi Tea Room and Bakery opened to the public on 1st June 2016, with the team recording good sales within the opening morning itself. The Bakery offers affordable and convenient organic food prepared under the supervision of qualified chefs, at the state of the art Culinary Centre at the Merrill J. Fernando Charitable Foundation in Moratuwa. The Swashakthi Bakery is a unique initiative by the MJF Foundation under the Women’s Development program. Created by combining two containers, the bakery has a sleek and modern interior, with a cool and inviting outdoor sitting area and is portable if necessary. The team handling operations at the Swashakthi Bakery include students from the Rainbow Centre as the MJF Foundation is committed to integrating the differently-abled into society as productive individuals. It is hoped to take this concept across Sri Lanka, promoting healthy food and providing the less privileged with a means to a sustainable income.
